Tour Outsider: Memorial Tournament

The US PGA Tour goes to Ohio this week to play at Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village for The Memorial Tournament.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 Phil Mickelson 5.30
2 Tiger Woods 5.50
3 Stewart Cink 8.50
4 Jim Furyk 10.35
5 Zach Johnson 12.20
6 Vijay Singh 15.40
7 Carl Pettersson 17.80
8 Adam Scott 18.85
9 Jerry Kelly 19.45
10 Sean O'Hair 20.25
11 K.J. Choi 23.45
12 Nick O'Hern 23.75
13 Tom Lehman 24.65
14 Peter Lonard 26.05
15 Brett Wetterich 26.70

As with last week, I am going to keep it simple and go with the top 5 from the CLi. The top 5 look good: Mickelson, Woods, Cink, Furyk, and Johnson. Singh is just outside of the top 5, and he would probably be a good pick. However, I will stick with what the CLi says this week.

So the Tour Outsider picks for The Memorial Tournament are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Phil Mickelson 5.30
2 Tiger Woods 5.50
3 Stewart Cink 8.50
4 Jim Furyk 10.35
5 Zach Johnson 12.20

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

This week we have two players in common: Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.

It is interesting to see that the Tour Insider picked Frazar, as he is not even in the field from what I can tell at this point in the week. Frazar does play well at the Memorial, so maybe Frazar will be added to the field sometime later this week.

Nice, as with the previous three weeks, picked another winner in Rory Sabbatini. In addition, all 5 of the players I picked made the cut.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

The Tour Insider did ok, and would have done better if Verplank had held on to the lead that he had after the 3rd round with Sabbatini. his pick in Kenny Perry hurt him it looks like as Perry missed the cut.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider: AT&T Classic Review

It is now time to review the picks for AT&T Classic to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 Fredrik Jacobson 10.25 MC MC 101 107 $0
2 Jonathan Byrd 14.90 9 14 27 11 $135,000
3 Stewart Cink 21.35 24 43 55 22 $43,740
4 Zach Johnson 27.85 1 4 5 49 $972,000
5 Steve Elkington 31.90 16 7 20 22 $81,000

Nice, as with the previous two weeks, picked another winner in Zach Johnson. However, I did have one (1) player miss the cut. My number one pick, Fredrik Jacobson missed the cut by a couple of shots. It is a good thing that Johnson played well enough to win.

Of note, I had passed upon on Ryuji Imada even though he was high in the CLi rankings. He placed 2nd after losing in a playoff with Johnson.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

The Tour Insider picked a winner in Zach Johnson as well. However, he did have two players miss the cut (Clark and DiMarco).

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Ousider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $1,231,740 $1,027,836 TO
Avg Rank 30.0 49.2 TO
Made Cut 4 3 TO
Outcome -- -- TO

The Tour Outsider won the Total Earnings category by just over $200,000.

The Tour Outsider won the Avg Rank category by a large margin of 19.2.

To take the sweep for the first time, the Tour Outsider won the Made Cut category.

This tournament was won by the Tour Outsider.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider to date is, 2 wins to the Tour Outsider, 0 wins to the Tour Insider, and 3 draws.

Tour Outsider: AT&T Classic

The US PGA Tour moves from their headquarters in northern Florida (TPC at Sawgrass) to another TPC course in Georgia: TPC at Sugar Loaf. The tournament this week is the AT&T Classic. The tournament was formerly called the BellSouth Classic before AT&T decided to put all the baby bells back in the AT&T fold. As with last week's PLAYERS Championship, this tournament has moved dates from last year to be after the Masters. Usually the tournament is played the week before the Masters.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 Fredrik Jacobson 10.25
2 Jonathan Byrd 14.90
3 Justin Bolli 17.00
4 Stewart Cink 21.35
5 Bob Tway 27.75
6 Zach Johnson 27.85
7 Ryuji Imada 29.40
8 Steve Elkington 31.90
9 Kevin Na 32.45
10 J.J. Henry 35.60
11 Peter Lonard 37.85
12 Alexander Cejka 38.40
13 Craig Bowden 39.05
14 Mathias Gronberg 40.50
15 Shaun Micheel 41.35

Jacobson and Byrd look like two good picks from the CLi list.

I will pass on Bolli. He is high in the CLi rankings for this tournament as he has placed 2nd two of the past 3 Nationwide Tour events he has played in. I do not know how he will play on the US PGA Tour stage.

Cink is always a good pick for this tournament as this is his home course.

Tway has been playing solidly, but I do not have a good feeling he will play well at Sugar Loaf this week. So I will pass on him.

Johnson plays well at Sugar Loaf and in the state of Georgia in general (i.e. the Masters winner this year).

Imada could play well this week, however, I am not comfortable in picking him.

Like the other veteran in the list, Tway, Steve Elkington has been playing well of late. I fell confident in picking him this week. I just hope he does not decide to pull out of the tournament, as he might do so after having played a tough week at Sawgrass this past week.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the AT&T Classic are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Fredrik Jacobson 10.25
2 Jonathan Byrd 14.90
3 Stewart Cink 21.35
4 Zach Johnson 27.85
5 Steve Elkington 31.90

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

The week we have two players in common: Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

The Tour Insider had all five (5) of his picks make the cut as well.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.
