Tour Outsider: Viking Classic Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Viking Classic to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 Carl Pettersson 5.80 59 54 60 90 $7,630
2 Charlie Wi 6.85 MC MC 73 116 $0
3 Heath Slocum 10.60 13 22 28 33 $65,625
4 Brett Wetterich 12.60 MC MC 98 116 $0
5 John Senden 21.20 5 9 5 8 $127,750

Again, not a good week, with two players missing the cut. I would have thought that Wi and Wetterich would have had no problem making the cut, but they didn't seem to do too well. Wi missed the cut on the number. His first round did him in. For Wetterich, he just did not have it this week.

On a positive note, did have a top five finish with Senden placing fifth.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Shedloski had a very nice week. He had winner (Campbell) and a third place finisher (Weekley). Plus, his worst finisher was only 39th. Nice going.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Ousider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $201,005 $944,525 TI
Avg Rank 49.2 15.6 TI
Made Cut 3 5 TI
Outcome -- -- TI

The Tour Insider won the Total Earnings category.

The Tour Insider won the Avg Rank category.

The Tour Insider won the Made Cut category.

This tournament was won by the Tour Insider in a sweep of all 3 categories. That is a sweep of all of the categories for 2 weeks in a row. Ouch.

This is the third week in a row that I have lost the challenge. Hopefully I will be able to turn things around this coming week for the tournament in my native state of Texas.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider to date is, 12 wins to the Tour Outsider, 9 wins to the Tour Insider, and 3 draws.

The CLi top 15 looked like this (see below).

Rank Player CLi
1 Carl Pettersson 5.80
2 Charlie Wi 6.85
3 Heath Slocum 10.60
4 Brett Wetterich 12.60
5 Shigeki Maruyama 16.40

12 Tommy Armour III 31.65
13 Cameron Beckman 33.60
14 Michael Allen 37.00
15 Kent Jones 38.20

I am going to go with the top 4 players in the CLi list. Then I am going to drop down to the 8th position to pick Senden. I can't skip over him two weeks in a row, especially after he placed well last week in the Turning Stone Resort Championship (3rd).

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Viking Classic are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Carl Pettersson 5.80
2 Charlie Wi 6.85
3 Heath Slocum 10.60
4 Brett Wetterich 12.60
5 John Senden 21.20

Tour Outsider: Turning Stone Resort Championship Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Turning Stone Resort Championship to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings

1 Ryan Palmer 5.00 MC MC 120 124 $0
2 Shigeki Maruyama 13.50 MC MC 96 105 $0
3 Cliff Kresge 19.15 25 49 42 24 $42,030
4 Steve Allan 22.15 MC MC 120 136 $0
5 Jeff Maggert 28.30 25 17 8 74 $42,030

Not a good week. Had 3 players miss the cut. It is never a good week when you have 1 player miss the cut, much less 3 out of 5. Plus it looks like a player that I passed over in the CLi list played well. That would be John Senden, who finished 3rd.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider: Turning Stone Resort Championship

The US PGA Tour now moves into a section of it's season where the hardy players duke it out to see who keep their playing privileges in 2008. The Fall Finish Series of tournaments start this week in the north-east United States at Turning Stone Resort Championship (formerly called the B.C. Open).

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 Ryan Palmer 5.00
2 Shigeki Maruyama 13.50
3 Alexander Cejka 17.70
4 Cliff Kresge 19.15
5 Steve Allan 22.15
6 John Senden 22.75
7 Jeff Maggert 28.30
8 Frank Lickliter II 28.35
9 Joey Sindelar 29.45
10 Ryuji Imada 29.80
11 Briny Baird 30.45
12 Paul Gow 30.45
13 John Rollins 34.25
14 Bob Heintz 36.00
15 Michael Allen 36.10

I will go with the top 2 players in Palmer and Maruyama. This week is Palmer's birthday and hopefully that will get his competitive juices going. Maruyama is back from Japan this week to try to keep moving up places on the money list. The trend of his play has been a steady incline. Hopefully that trend of improvement will continue this week.

I will pass on Cejka, even though I like his style of play. He has just not been consistent of late.

Then will pick up Kresge, who is a solid young player who might be able to shine in this type of tournament, and Allan, who was playing well before the start of the FedExCup Playoff tournaments.

I will pass on Senden, even though he could be a good pick, so I can get to Maggert. I think Maggert plays well in these types of tournaments...more so than Senden.

When I say "this type of tournament", I am referring this being a third-tier type of tournament where not all of the best players are present. Majors would be considered first-tier tournaments, and then strong US PGA Tour tournaments where top ranked players play (i.e. BMW Championship, Deutsch Championship, Nissan Open, etc.) would be considered second-tier type of tournaments.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Turning Stone Resort Championship are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Ryan Palmer 5.00
2 Shigeki Maruyama 13.50
3 Cliff Kresge 19.15
4 Steve Allan 22.15
5 Jeff Maggert 28.30

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

This week we have 1 player in common: Maruyama.

Tour Outsider: Tour Championship Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Tour Championship (US PGA Tour) to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 Tiger Woods 2.20 1 1 1 3 $1,260,000
2 Adam Scott 5.80 26 12 3 5 $116,900
3 Phil Mickelson 7.50 20 14 12 13 $134,400
4 Ernie Els 7.90 26 29 22 21 $116,900
5 Rory Sabbatini 8.80 9 13 16 13 $204,400

Woods was a winner for a second week in a row. Good thing that I picked him. However, the other 4 picks were not too hot based upon a 30 player field. Scott shot 78 during the final round -- looking like he didn't care to be playing in the tournament since he couldn't win it. He moved down 14 spots in the final round. Els could never get anything going on a course that was there for the taking.

My picks had a rank average of 13.4 for the 5 players I picked. That basically means that my picks were right down the middle in terms of the good-and-bad line. Ugh, not good.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Ousider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $1,832,600 $1,930,600 TI
Avg Rank 13.4 12.8 TI
Made Cut 5 5 DRAW
Outcome -- -- TI

The Tour Insider won the Total Earnings category.

The Tour Insider won the Avg Rank category.

The Made Cut category was a draw.

This tournament was won by the Tour Insider.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider to date is, 12 wins to the Tour Outsider, 7 wins to the Tour Insider, and 3 draws.
