Greenbrier Classic

The USA PGA Tour heads to the fame Greenbrier Resort in Virgina to play the inaugural Greenbrier Classic.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the Greenbrier Classic .

# Player CLi
1 Carl Pettersson   1.50
2 Charlie Wi  2.50
3 Charley Hoffman  5.50
4 Brendon De Jonge  6.25
5 Jeffrey Overton  7.50
6 Jeff Maggert  7.75
7 Dean Wilson  8.00
8 Garrett Willis  8.50
9 Matt Bettencourt  9.75
10 Greg Chalmers  9.75
11 Matthew Jones  11.25
12 Matt Kuchar  13.50
13 John Merrick  13.50
14 Michael Letzig  14.00
15 Bob Estes  17.50

In looking at this week's top 5 players in the CLi rankings, they look rather good. As well, the CLi did last week with the top 5. Both last week's tournament (RBC Canadian Open) and this tournametn are new courses for the players, which makes the CLi patterns possibly similar between these two tournaments. So I am going to go make it easy on myself and go with the top, and then get back to studying for comps. Enjoy the tournament.

Below are my 5 picks for the Greenbrier Classic :

The Total Earnings category was won by the Tour Outsider.

The Avg Rank category was won by the Tour Outsider.

The Made Cut category was a draw.

This tournament overall was won by the Tour Outsider.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider is 12 wins to the Tour Outsider, 15 wins to the Tour Insider, and 1 draw.

With Pettersson winning the tournament, I thought I had this tournament going away even though it came down to the last couple of holes. I did win the earnings category running away. However, I just squeaked by in the rank average category. The 128th place finish by Couples came close to allowsing Bolton to have a draw in this tournament even though I had a winner in Pettersson. In the end, it is a win. Yeah.

It looks like I am still having difficulty picking players for the British Open. The patterns in the data in past instances of the British Open do not seem to be working; nor is the level of play leading up to the tournament. A lot of it is seems to be related to the weather, and the draw of the tee times for each player.  The weather at the British Open plays a larger factor compared to many other tournaments.  Or maybe there are other factors that I am just missing and failing to take into account for the British Open. All in all, it makes the British Open tough to pick players. But that is what makes it fun to try.

Reno-Tahoe Open

Along with being part of the sanctioning bodies for the Reno-Tahoe Open, this week the US PGA Tour is also hosting its open tournament, the Reno-Tahoe Open.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the Reno-Tahoe Open.

# Player CLi
1 Vaughn Taylor   1.80
2 Joe Ogilvie  7.30
3 John Merrick  8.10
4 Rod Pampling  13.80
5 Steve Elkington  16.00
6 Chris DiMarco  17.30
7 Billy Mayfair  18.90
8 Robert Garrigus  20.10
9 Johnson Wagner  22.70
10 James Nitties  24.90
11 Nicholas Thompson  25.00
12 Kris Blanks  25.70
13 Jeff Quinney  28.90
14 Alexander Cejka  29.10
15 Scott McCarron  30.10

The first 5 players in the CLi rankings look good. Three of them have CLi figures below 10, which is usually a good sign for them and the overall CLi as a whole in terms of its prediction value for this tournament (at least based upon the settings that I have for the CLi for this tournament). The 4th and 5th players in the CLi rankings do not have CLi figures below 10, but they tend to play well in this tournament and have played decent leading up to this tournament. So I am going to go with the top 5 players in the CLi rankings.

Below are my 5 picks for the Reno-Tahoe Open:

# Player CLi
1 Vaughn Taylor   1.80
2 Joe Ogilvie  7.30
3 John Merrick  8.10

British Open

This week the US PGA Tour and the rest of the professional golfing world heads to the U.K. to play (or turns their head towards the U.K. to watch) the British Open in Scotland at St. Andrews.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the British Open.

# Player CLi
1  Tiger Woods   1.34
2 Steve Stricker  7.30
3 Lee Westwood  8.11
4 Padraig Harrington  8.44
5 Jim Furyk  11.70
6 Ernie Els  12.56
7 Retief Goosen  14.63
8 Phil Mickelson  17.11
9 Justin Rose  22.41
10 Ryan Moore  24.76
11 Rory McIlroy  24.99
12 Robert Allenby  25.26
13 Ian Poulter  25.88
14 Tom Watson  26.35
15 Luke Donald  27.44

There are some good names in this list of players in the top CLi. The CLi shows that Woods has a clear advantage based upon historical results, which is signaled by his 1.34 CLi figure. With all of his troubles personally, and the British media hounding him because of those personal issues, it would seem that he might be flustered and blown away in this tournament. However, he seems to pull through in the major events more often than naught. So I am going to keep him in my picks.

I will then pick Stricker for my second choice. Coming off a win last week at the John Deere, and doing so in strong fashion, he should have a high level confidence to knock it around St. Andrews. St. Andrews, and links golf altogether, is much different than the course he played on in Moline at the John Deere. However, he has a strong short game that will help him get through some of the possible roadblocks links golf will confront him with during the 4 days of the tournament.

I am going to pass over Westwood and Harrington. Even though Westwood has been playing well and Harrington plays well in the British Open, both are coming off injuries. That makes picking them a little risky. If there were not good players further down the list, I would pick them. But there are good players that follow both of these players, which makes my eye and mind lean towards those players.

For my 3rd and 4th picks, I am going to go with Furyk and Els. Furyk is a player I like to have in my stable on tough courses. He might not win the tournament, but he will not play poorly. So he is usually a "loss avoider" pick for me. Whereas, picking Els provides me a chance to win the tournament, but also a risk in missing the cut. He likes St. Andrews and loves playing here in tournaments. So hopefully that will spur him to play well this week.

For my final pick, I am going to go with Rose. Yes, I skipped over some good players in Goosen and Mickelson. However, Rose has been playing very well of late, having won the AT&T National two weeks ago. As well, he is British and would love to return to form in the British Open like he did when he first played here as an amateur in 1998.

Below are my 5 picks for the British Open:

# Player CLi
1 Tiger Woods   1.34
2 Steve Stricker  7.30
3 Jim Furyk  11.70
4 Ernie Els  12.56
5 Justin Rose  22.41

Below is the top 5 players in the Power Rankings from Rob Bolton:

  1. Tiger Woods
  2. Ernie Els
  3. Lee Westwood
  4. Phil Mickelson
  5. Retief Goosen

Bolton's Power Rankings: British Open

We have 2 players in common this week: Woods and Els.

Below are the settings for the CLi calculation I used for the British Open. If you have read my past postings, you will see that I used a different strategy for this tournament. The British Open is a difficult tournament to predict who will play, and I have not been very good at predicting which players will play well in the British Open in the past. So I have changed the configuration settings rather drastically compared to what I have normally use. I am making the weights basically be equal and increasing the number of days and tournaments to take into accont the entire years. This is normally not good in my opinion as the results will not favor the players that have the recent spurt of good play and thus have a higher confidence level. So I am going against my normal wisdom with this configuration setting of the CLi.

This week was a good week for both Bolton and I. Combined, we had the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places locked down. I am just glad that I was the one that had 2 of those picks in Rose and Overton. Rose won the tournament and Overton finished 3rd. That is a nice week when picking 5 players from a field of 120 players.
