14 Charl Schwartzel 27.70
15 Justin Rose 31.60

I am not going to provide much in terms of explanation for my picks as I am late in posting my picks (have been focused on my dissertation this week).

Crane (analysis) is a clear favorite per the low CLi figure (3.20) and the next best CLi figure being 10.20.  So I will go with him.  For the next two picks, I will stick with the next two players in the CLi rankings: Allenby (analysis) and Westwood (analysis).  Then I will skip down to Stanley (analysis) and Jacobson (analysis).

Below are my 5 picks for the Honda Classic:

Ouch.  I lost both tournaments this weekend: the Accenture Match Play Championship and the Mayakoba Classic.  That is tough.

Sabbatini was not a smart pick for me.  He missed the cut with flying colors. Baird was definitely a smart pick for Bolton.

It is a good thing I was not able to pick Donald, as he crashed out in the first round. However, that resulted in me deciding to either pick Westwood or Garcia.  I selected Garcia.  I should have picked Westwood instead.  Westwood, who had not one more than two matches in any of the past instances of the tournament, made it to the semis.

Mayakoba Classic

As mentioned in my previous post this morning, the US PGA Tour has two events this week. One is the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, and the other is the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico. This post is for the Mayakoba Classic.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the Mayakoba Classic.

# Player CLi
1 Johnson Wagner 2.75
2 Brian Gay 5.75
3 John Cook 6.80
4 Spencer Levin 10.45
5 Rory Sabbatini 18.05
6 Peter Lonard 21.65
7 Tom Lehman 23.05
8 Jarrod Lyle 25.40
9 William McGirt 25.90
10 Nick Price 29.25
11 J.P. Hayes 33.20
12 Billy Horschel 34.25
13 Harrison Frazar 36.20
14 Charles Howell III 36.55
15 Chris Stroud 37.25

Wagner (analysis) looks like a clear favorite.  He is tops in the CLi rankings with a CLi of 2.75.  That is low, and rightly so.  He won the tournament last year, has a first and second place finish so far this year, and has yet to miss a cut in the tournaments he has played this year.

Gay (analysis) plays well in this tournament, having won it in 2008.  In the four times he has played in the event, he has not missed a cut.  He is coming off a 20th finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am two weeks ago, and has a 6th place finish in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

I am going to skip over Cook (analysis) even though he is placed well in the CLi rankings and has had several good finishes at this tournament --- he finished 3rd in the tournament last year.  The main reason he is placed well in the CLi rankings is because of his Champions Tour finishes.  The CLi uses all tournaments played by a player, and doesn't let the user pick which tournaments to not include....one of the flaws of the CLi calculation.

Levin (analysis) continues to place well in the CLi rankings.  This is logical, as he is playing well, and he placed 2nd in this event last year after losing in a playoff to Wagner.

Sabbatini (analysis) placed 5th in this event last year.  As for his play of late, he has been sporadic.  He started the season off well with a 14th and 29th finish. However, he has missed the cut the past two weeks at the Northern Trust Open and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. If you look closely, it has been one round in each event that has hurt him....an 80 in the 2nd round of the Northern Trust Open and a 77 in the 2nd round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.  If he can play a little more consistently in the 2nd round (i.e. don't let the bad shots hurt him), he should finish well in this event.

For my final pick, I am going to skip down to Lyle (analysis).  I watched him play last week at the Northern Trust Open and he is hitting it well.   In addition, he has played this event 4 times and notched 3 top ten finishes along with a 36th finish.  In other words, he has yet to miss the cut in this event.

Below are my 5 picks for the Mayakoba Classic:

# Player CLi
1 Johnson Wagner 2.75
2 Brian Gay 5.75
3 Spencer Levin 10.45
4 Rory Sabbatini 18.05

Accenture Match Play Championship

This week, the US PGA Tour has two events. One is the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, and the other is the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico. This post is for the Accenture Match Play Championship.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the Accenture Match Play Championship.

# Player CLi
1 Rory McIlroy 4.55
2 Ben Crane 6.60
3 Tiger Woods 10.00
4 Bubba Watson 11.85
5 Mark Wilson 12.35
6 Bill Haas 13.00
7 Kyle Stanley 14.75
8 Steve Stricker 14.75
9 Brandt Snedeker 15.15
10 Lee Westwood 15.40
11 Webb Simpson 16.65
12 Keegan Bradley 18.30
13 Aaron Baddeley 18.30
14 Graeme McDowell 18.45
15 Sergio Garcia 18.95

In addition to the Golf CLi, I used an additional tool for making my picks for this match play event. It is Fanooz's Head-to-Head. As the name of the tool implies, the tool allows you to compare the results of selected players to determine how they do head-to-head. So, using the brackets, I ran through each match with the Head-to-Head tool and simulated the outcomes until I came up with a winner based upon what the results were from the Head-to-Head tool. Then I compared those results with the Golf CLi to come up with my picks.

[ Use the Head-to-Head tool for the Accenture Match Play Championship ]

The Head-to-Head analysis using the Head-to-Head tool resulted in Crane (analysis), Donald (analysis), McIlroy (analysis), Stricker (analysis), and Woods (analysis) being the top 5 picks [ the tool predicts Stricker to win it all ].  4 of these 5 players are in the top 15 CLi rankings, with Donald being the player left out.  Since I can only pick players from the top 15 in the CLi rankings, I need to pick a substitute player for Donald.  That is frustrating, as I think Donald is going to play well this week.

The next players that the Head-to-Head tool said to pick were Scott (analysis), Kuchar (analysis), Day (analysis), and Rose (analysis).  All 4 of those players were also outside the top 15 in the CLi rankings.  Then going further down the Head-to-Head list it left me with Westwood (analysis) and Garcia (analysis), who are in the top 15 in the CLi rankings.  Garcia played well last week, but can be sporadic.  This is shown in his finishes in this tournament. He has placed 4th and 9th several times, but has also gone out in the first round several times as well.  Westwood is a bulldog, which usually bodes well in match play.  However, Westwood has not gotten past the 2nd round of match play in this event (i.e. he has not won more than one match in this event).  So I am going to go with Garcia on this one, with the hope that this year's event is an "up year" for him.

Below are my 5 picks for the Accenture Match Play Championship:

We are all tied up now, at 3 wins a piece. My early season lead has been wiped out in the last two weeks.

One of my picks, Mickelson, placed second losing in a playoff. However, Bolton had Mickelson in his picks as well. So that was a wash. Overall, Bolton had some strong picks: 4 of his 5 placed in the top 17, with two in the top 4. What really hurt me this week was that my picks all flared out in the last two rounds....having a scoring average of 73 and 76 in rounds 3 and 4. They lost a combined 63 places in the final round alone. Not a strong weekend for my picks.

Northern Trust Open

This week, the US PGA Tour is at Riveria Country Club in beautiful Pacific Palisades, California, to play the Northern Trust Open.

Here are a couple of off-the-wall stats about this week's field in general:
  • 12 of the top 15 players in the tournament's money leaders are playing this week. Stricker and Weir are the notable players that are missing in the field when examining this list of players. [ see entire list ]
  • A total of 409 different players have played in the tournament since 2000. Of those 409 players, 135 of them have played the tournament only once, with 18 of those players in the field this year. Of those 409 players, 124 of them have never made the cut, with 13 of those players in the field this year.
  • The lowest score for the tournament since 2000 is 17-under, by Mike Weir in 2004. [ past leaderboards ]
  • Last year, the tournament had 144 players that played 437 rounds (31,396 strokes; 71.84 average per round) which distributed $6,587,360 in winnings.  The averages: $45,746 per player; $15,074 per round; $210 per stroke. [ stats from last year ]
  • Two players have birthdays this week: Cameron Beckman and Greg Owen.

Now to the real stuff of interest.  Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the Northern Trust Open.

# Player CLi
1 Phil Mickelson 2.20
2 Kevin Na 10.85
3 Spencer Levin 12.10
4 Brendon De Jonge 17.25
5 Luke Donald 19.65
6 John Rollins 20.00
7 Aaron Baddeley 20.90
8 Charles Howell III 22.00
9 Rory Sabbatini 24.55
10 Jimmy Walker 24.55
11 Cameron Tringale 26.20
12 Charlie Wi 26.70
13 Dustin Johnson 27.40
14 Sergio Garcia 27.80
15 Ricky Barnes 27.85

I am going to go with Mickelson (analysis), Na (analysis), Levin (analysis), Donald (analysis), and Rollins (analysis).

Mickelson is the all time money leader for the event, won last week, and loves playing on the west coast in general.  The CLi figure clearly shows that with his 2.20 CLi...and the next player's CLi being over 8 points higher at 10.85.

Na finished 3rd here last year, and 10th in 2010.  He has played the event 8 times, and after missing the cut the first 3 times he played the tournament, he has finished 55th or better in this event the last five times.  He is playing well leading up to the tournament with two 5th place finishes in the last two tournaments.

Levin played here for the first time last year and placed 12th -- a good showing for the first time playing Riveria on the big stage.  And he is playing well leading up to this tournament.  The question will be if he will get mentally tired towards the later rounds of the tournament because he has been playing a lot so far this year (every week, except the first week of the tournament of champions) and his experiences two weeks ago in Arizona at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  Hopefully he will pull through with 4 good rounds.

Donald missed the cut last year in this event, which kick started his stellar play last year.  Prior to last year, Donald had finished 2nd, 6th, and 3rd in the previous instances of this tournament.  So he tends to play well in this event.  He has only played one event this year, which was in Abu Dhabi where he placed 48th.

As for my fifth pick, I selected Rollins.  I selected Rollins over De Jonge because Rollins is playing well leading up to this tournament.  De Jonge missed the cut in his last event two weeks ago (the Waste Management Phoenix Open).  Rollins has had a sporadic array of finishes the 9 times he has played in this tournament.  He has 4 missed cuts over the course of the 9 events, which is not good, especially since comparing to De Jonge's two instances of the tournament where he has placed 25th and 10th.  However, Rollins has 5 top 25 finishes in the other 5 instances he has played in the event.

Below are my 5 picks for the Northern Trust Open:

# Player CLi
1 Phil Mickelson 2.20
2 Kevin Na 10.85

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am

Time is starting to move fast for this year's season. Five tournaments have already been played, and it won't be long before the US PGA Tour will be finishing up the West Coast swing and heading to the Florida Swing.  However, before getting ahead of myself, it is time to focus on this week's tournament.

This week, the US PGA Tour is on the famed (and beautiful) Monterrey pennisula to play the charismatic AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.

# Player CLi
1 Spencer Levin 7.95
2 John Mallinger 13.55
3 D.A. Points 14.50
4 Sean O'Hair 17.60
5 Rickie Fowler 19.75
6 Bryce Molder 21.25

9 Josh Teater 26.30

11 Rod Pampling 27.70
12 Brandt Snedeker 27.70
13 Vijay Singh 28.50
14 James Driscoll 28.95
15 Phil Mickelson 29.80

Even though the CLi figures are high for this tournament (only one player has a CLi figure below 10),  I am still going to stick with the top 5 in the CLi rankings: Levin (analysis), Mallinger (analysis), Points (analysis), O'Hair (analysis), and Fowler (analysis).

Levin is tops on the list.  He has played well, and could have easily won last week running away in Arizona.  However, he let his nerves get to him during the final round (playing it safe, rather than staying strong in his mind) and Stanley made up for his previous week's final hole collapse.  It would be cool if Levin did the same thing as Stanley, and pulled a win this week in the AT&T after his final round performance in Arizona last week.  It will come down to mental toughness, because he is definitely on his game physically with his swing.  He placed 4th last year in this tournament and has never missed the cut in the three times he has played in the event.  He has played four of the five tournaments this year, and has made the cut in all four of the tournaments.

If you take out last year's performance in this event, Mallinger has played well in this event.  He has two 3rd place finishes (2007 and 2008).  He has played sporaic in the three tournaments he has played in this year.  But one of those three events, he placed 2nd (at the Humana Challenge -- which has the same feel as the AT&T being a pro-am event).

Points won this event last year, and has two 8th place finishes in the three tournaments he has played in this year.  He finished 45th last week in Arizona.

O'Hair has placed respectively in this tournament the past three years, placing 31st (2011), 35th (2010), and 10th (2009).  In the three tournaments he has played in this year, he has finished 2nd (Sony Open), 17th (Hyundai Tournament of Champions), and 45th (Waste Management Phoenix Open).

Fowler has finally made into my picks this year.  Some have suggested that he should have been there prior to now as he is a California boy, loves playing in California, this is the West Coast swing where tournaments are in California, he is a solid player, etc.  Well, now he is in my picks for a California tournament.  Fowler has placed 27th the one time he has played the tournament (in 2010), and has placed 13th and 26th in the first two tournaments he has played in this year.

Below are my 5 picks for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am:

2 John Mallinger 13.55

On a different note, Crane continues to confuse me. He has been high in the CLi rankings the last 4 tournaments. I have picked him twice, and passed over him twice. The two times that I picked him, he played poorly. And the two times that I didn't pick him, he played well. He placed 2nd this week. Maybe this is a case of not trying to play the market. Whenever he is in the rankings, should I just pick him???? I don't know.  I am just glad that I got a win this week so I can keep my lead over Bolton :-)
