True South Classic

This week the US PGA Tour is in England for the British Open, while also in Madison, Mississippi for the True South Classic.  This post is for the True South Classic (click here for the British Open post).

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the True South Classic.

# Player CLi
1  Blake Adams 8.0
2  Brendon De Jonge 8.8
3  Ken Duke 10.9
4  Billy Horschel 13.8
5  Tommy Gainey 15.8
6  Lee Janzen 19.8
7  Jerry Kelly 21.7
8  Hunter Haas 22.3
9  Joe Durant 25.8
10  David Hearn 27.9
11  Heath Slocum 28.1
12  Nathan Green 28.3
13  Bill Lunde 30.8
14  Tom Pernice Jr 31.0
15  Kevin Kisner 31.4

I am going to go with the first 4 players in the CLi rankings: Adams (analysis), De Jonge(analysis), Duke>(analysis), and Horschel(analysis).

Adams placed 9th here last year and is playing well this year.  Over the past 4 weeks, he has solid showings (25th, 17th, 48th, and 29th) and hasn't missed a cut since early May (in the Wells Fargo Championship).

As has been mentioned in my posts the last 2-3 weeks, De Jonge is playing well.  Over the past 4 weeks he has placed 19th, 52nd, 11th, and 8th.  And he hasn't missed a cut since mid-April (in the Valero Texas Open).  He has finished 13th, 3rd and 29th in the 3 instances he has played this event.

Duke plays well in this event.  He has finished 8th, 25th, 11th, and 69th in the 4 times he has played in the event.  He did miss the cut last week at the John Deere Classic.  However, in the 3 previous events before the John Deere Classic he finished 7th, 47th, and 7th.  [ BTW: He seems to like placing 7th; he has four 7th place finishes in the last 10 events. ]

Horschel placed 18th here last year, the only time he has played in the event.  In the last four events he has made the cut, with a low finish of 24th in the Travelers Championship in mid/late-June.

For my last pick, I am going to skip over Gainey (analysis) and Janzen (analysis) and pick my former Florida neighbor, Kelly (analysis).  Kelly placed 11th here in 2010, the last time he played in the event.  In the past three events, he has placed 36th, 12th, and 37th.  In two of those events (the Greenbrier Classic and the Travelers Championship), he started off with a strong first round.  So he is starting well.  Maybe he will finish well this week.

Below are my 5 picks for the True South Classic:

# Player CLi
1  Blake Adams 8.0
2  Brendon De Jonge 8.8
3  Ken Duke 10.9
4  Billy Horschel 13.8

British Open

This week all the major tours, including the US PGA Tour, is in England to play the British Open.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the British Open.

# Player CLi
1  Padraig Harrington 11.7
2  Tiger Woods 14.7
3  Steve Stricker 17.7
4  Tom Lehman 20.0
5  Zach Johnson 21.1
6  Luke Donald 21.6
7  Marcel Siem 22.2
8  Dustin Johnson 23.2
9  Nick Watney 24.3
10  Fredrik Jacobson 28.3
11  Hunter Mahan 29.3
12  Mark Calcavecchia 30.1
13  Sergio Garcia 31.1
14  Francesco Molinari 31.7
15  Justin Rose 32.4

No big surprises here, except that Lehman (analysis) is in the top 5.  He plays the Champions Tour, He has been playing well and the British Open is back at the course he won the championship in 1996.  However, his low finishes are on the Champions Tour, which might be overweighted when comparing results to players on the regular tours.  So, even though the CLi is suggesting that he will play well again this week, I am going to pass on him.

I am going with Harrington (analysis), Woods (analysis), Stricker (analysis), Z. Johnson (analysis), and Donald (analysis).  Harrington has missed the cut in the last two British Open, but he won the event the two years prior.  He went through several years of playing poorly. He has turned it around this year.  He has finished 16th, 7th, 11th, and 4th in his last four events.

Woods has won three times this year and looks to get back into the winner's circle in a major to add a 4th Claret Jug to his trophy cabinet.  This week could be his week, especially if the weather gets bad.  It will be a good test for him mentally if the weather is tough for the field.

Stricker was in the hunt last week at the John Deere Classic before falling back on the back nine during the final round.  So he is hitting it well.  It will all depend on how he handles the weather and how his neck holds up.

Johnson (Zach) won last at the John Deere Classic, and he has made the cut in the British the past 5 years.  He is a steady player, which bodes well in a British Open where steady wins.  This is especially the case when the weather goes south.

Donald won in the BMW PGA Championship in late May.  Since then he has played 3 events in which he has finished 16th, 108th (missed the cut), and 12th.  The missed cut was at the U.S. Open.  And he hasn't played well in the majors of late.  Hopefully being back in his native England will bring out the best in him.  He has the short game and steady play to do well in a tournament like the British Open.

Below are my 5 picks for the British Open:

# Player CLi

We almost had all 10 picks (7 players) make the cut, and in a sense we did. However, Hoffman made the cut and then withdrew after the 3rd round.  A withdraw is equivalent to a missed cut.

With a win (Johnson) and 5th place (Stricker, who was near the lead all four rounds), it was a good tournament for our picks.

The end result was a draw.  Even though I had a lower average ranking of the players, Bolton had higher total earnings (his 3rd place finish by Piercy helped him with that; he was hurt by Byrd's 54th place finish).

John Deere Classic

This week the US PGA Tour goes to the mid-west to play the John Deere Classic.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the John Deere Classic.

# Player CLi
1 Tim Clark 7.35
2 Charley Hoffman 11.45
3 Brendon De Jonge 14.50
4 Zach Johnson 14.50
5 Jonathan Byrd 17.20
6 Ken Duke 22.10
7 Jeffrey Overton 29.10
8 Jerry Kelly 29.75
9 Steve Stricker 29.80
10 Jeff Maggert 30.20
11 Chez Reavie 32.75
12 Heath Slocum 33.60
13 Chad Campbell 38.70
14 Daniel Summerhays 38.75
15 Kyle Stanley 39.55

As with last week, only one player has a CLi figure less than 10. That is Clark (analysis) with a CLi figure of 7.35.  He earns this low CLi figure by finishing 7th, 18th, and 2nd the three times he has played this event.  He finished 4th in his last outing, which was the Travelers Championship.  His only hiccup the past two months was a missed cut at the U.S. Open.  Other than the U.S. Open, he has had solid finishes.

Hoffman (analysis) has been playing solid golf the past three weeks, starting with his 2nd place finish 3 weeks ago in the Travelers Championship.  He followed up his strong finish in the Travelers Championship with a 22nd place finish at the AT&T National.  He started off well last week in the Greenbrier Classic with a 66 in the first round.  However, he faded to a 67th finish over the weekend.  He finished 7th in 2010 in this event (the last time he played this event), and 15th the year before.

De Jonge (analysis) was a favorite to play well last week in the Greenbrier Classic, but only could mustard a 52nd finish.  He did throw in a 64 in the second round to show that he is still hitting the ball well.  So along with his recent 11th place finish in the AT&T National and 8th place in the Travelers Championship, his game is probably still going strong. With two 7th place finishes in this event the past two years, he looks like a good pick to me.

Johnson (analysis) loves this tournament.  Being from the mid-west (Iowa), this tournament is close to home for him.  In the past 3 years, he has two top-3 finishes: 3rd in 2011 and 2nd in 2009.  He is now looking for a "W" in this event.  As for his current play, it is lacking, with a 64th finish in the Travelers Championship 3 weeks ago, a 41st in the U.S. Open, and a missed cut in the FedEx St. Jude Classic.  But he does have a win in late May at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Byrd (analysis) is a hard player to skip over, but I am going to pick Stricker (analysis) as my fifth pick.  Byrd has won this tournament in 2007, finished 2nd in 2003, and has an average ranking of 37.4 in the 8 times he has played the event (and an even lower ranking of 24.0 if you don't include last year's missed cut).  He is playing well coming into the tournament with several top 10 finishes in the past several months.

However, with Stricker (a fellow Illini alumni) having won this tournament the previous three years, it would be foolish not to pick him.  In his limited play (due to his neck issues), he has played well in the past two tournaments he has played in, finishing 22nd last week in the Greenbrier Classic and 15th in the U.S. Open.

Below are my 5 picks for the John Deere Classic:

Congrats to both Ted Potter and Troy Kelly on their finishes. Exciting for both of them.

Greenbrier Classic

This week the US PGA Tour is in West Virginia to play at the famed Greenbrier Resort, famous for being Sam Snead's "local" course.  The tournament is Greenbrier Classic.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the Greenbrier Classic.

# Player CLi
1 Brendon De Jonge 8.65
2 Jim Furyk 16.20
3 John Rollins 17.20
4 Marc Leishman 17.35
5 Charley Hoffman 20.65
6 Webb Simpson 22.45
7 Stuart Appleby 26.00
8 Roland Thatcher 26.30
9 Jeffrey Overton 26.60
10 John Merrick 27.35
11 Greg Owen 27.65
12 Seung-yul Noh 30.20
13 Andres Romero 30.75
14 Brian Davis 31.05
15 J.B. Holmes 31.20

De Jonge (analysis) is the only player that has a CLi figure below 10.  His CLi figure is 8.65.  The next lowest CLi figure is 16.20 (Furyk).  That would suggest two things: 1) that the CLi doesn't think there is a clear favorite (since only one player has a CLi figure below 10, and it is not much lower than 10), or 2) that De Jonge could be a clear favorite.

De Jonge has been playing well leading up to this tournament.  He was leading after 3 rounds last week at the AT&T National before faltering in the final round (77).  He finished 11th.  Two weeks ago he finished 8th in the Travelers Championship.  As for this tournament, he has finished 4th and 3rd.

Furyk (analysis) has been in the top 5 of the CLi rankings a lot the past two months.  A lot of that has to do with him playing well.  He finished 34th last week at the AT&T National, and prior to that 4th at the U.S. Open (which he was leading up to the last two holes of the tournament).  He has played this tournament once (in 2010) and finished 9th.

Rollins (analysis) has not played well the last 4 tournaments he has played in except in his last event.  He finished 4th in the last tournament he played in -- two week ago, the Travelers Championship. Prior to June he had a good April and May.  He missed the cut here last year, but finished 21st in 2010. He might be back on track and could finish well at Greenbrier, as I am mainly looking at his 4th place finish in his last event.

I am skipping over Leishman (analysis) and Hoffman (analysis) to pick Simpson (analysis) and Appleby (analysis).  Leishman won two weeks ago in the Travelers Championship, and Hoffman finished 2nd that week.  The reason is because I am looking at supporting the U.S. Open championship (Simpson) and the inaugural winner in the 2010 Greenbrier Classic (Appleby).  Simpson also finished 9th in this tournament last year.

Below are my 5 picks for the Greenbrier Classic:

# Player CLi
1 Brendon De Jonge 8.65
2 Jim Furyk 16.20
3 John Rollins 17.20
4 Webb Simpson 22.45
5 Stuart Appleby 26.00

Below are the top 5 players in the Power Rankings from Rob Bolton:
  1. Tiger Woods
  2. Webb Simpson
  3. Dustin Johnson
  4. Jim Furyk
  5. Steve Stricker

Note the change from the normal setting I use when calculating the Golf CLi for a tournament.  Since this tournament is only in it's 3rd year, I set the "number of past tournaments looking back" to 2.  Then I lowered the weight put on the "number of past tournaments looking back" from 25% to 15% for both the scoring average weight and the earnings average weight.  To make up the differences in the weights, I increased the scoring and earnings average weights for the "number of days looking back" from 5% to 15%.
