I had 3 players in the top 5, with one of them being a winner (Johnson).  Bolton had two players in the top 4, and one of them being a winner (Johnson, as well).  Usually that would have given me a win.  However, my 5th pick, Davis, decided to withdraw --- ugh!!! All Davis had to do was place 87th or better and I would have had a better average rank than Bolton.  But no, Davis had to withdraw, which put him at the bottom of the pack (123rd).  The result: a loss this week for me.

I am not able to get the details of each player's results as the Golf CLi site is flaking out (due to the hosting company, ugh!!! -- and yes, I paid the bills; they are just a bad hosting company. shame on me for picking them).  So I am not able to use the details of each of the player's CLi compilation to make my picks.  Thus, I am going to just eyeball the players to pick my players this week, which means I will not be providing reasons for why I picked the players or didn't pick a player.

I am late in posting the CLi rankings this week, and so with the CLi figures low this week (3 players under 10), I am going to make the process of picking players easy by sticking with the CLi rankings.  The players all look good based upon their detail statistics (which the CLi uses to calculate the rankings).  However, I just hope that Points' back is doing well, as he pulled out of last week's TPC at the last minute because of his back.  The CLi still has him number one in the rankings, and he is a fellow Illini alumni.  So I will stick with him, and the other 4 players in the top 5 of the CLi rankings.

This was an unusual week for Bolton. He had 3 players miss the cut.  And it just so happened that I picked the 2 players in his picks that made the cut.  This gives me another win, which I will take so that I can build a cushion over Bolton heading into the summer season.

The PLAYERS Championship

This week is the US PGA Tour's gem: the PLAYERS Championship. It is played on a course it owns, Sawgrass, which is a great course in Florida. It is a classical Pete Dye-designed course, and is the home of the island green -- the famous 17th hole. With a great course and great field, this week should be another fu-filled tournament.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the PLAYERS Championship.

# Player CLi
1 Lee Westwood 9.30
2 Luke Donald 11.40
3 Francesco Molinari 11.85
4 Jason Dufner 14.05
5 Phil Mickelson 15.35
6 Ian Poulter 19.00
7 Jason Day 20.05
8 Peter Hanson 22.30
9 Ernie Els 25.45
10 Brian Davis 27.50
11 Tiger Woods 27.80
12 Matt Kuchar 29.10
13 Hunter Mahan 30.10
14 Zach Johnson 30.80
15 Jim Furyk 30.90

The CLi rankings are a little high this week, with only one player having a CLi figure less than 10.  That is Westwood, who has a CLi of 9.30.  He just barely squeaked in under the 10-figure rule-of-thumb selection metric.  In any event, I am going to stick with the CLi rankings this week.  The top 5 players in the rankings all look good: Westwood, Donald, Molinari, Dufner, and Mickelson.

Westwood (analysis) finished 4th last year in this event and comes in play well of late.  He finished 5th last week at the Wells Fargo Championship, won the Indonesian Masters several weeks ago, and finished 3rd in the Masters a month ago.

Donald (analysis) also finished 4th last year in this event.  He has not played as well as Westwood of late. But he did finish 3rd two weeks ago in Zurich, won the Transitions Championship in mid-March, and has yet to miss a cut this year.

Molinari (analysis).  If you don't look at tournaments outside of the US PGA Tour, you would not necessarily see Molinari in the list of players this week that could play well. However, he won last week in Spain in a European PGA tour sanctioned event, and finished 6th in the Volvo China Open in mid-April.  He finished 19th in the Masters, and was close to grabbing a top-10 before dropping back several places with a final round of 74.  He has yet to miss a cut this year.  However, he did miss the cut last year in this event after finishing 9th in 2010.  I am going to stick with him because he is playing well coming into the tournament and he has a top-10 in this event.

Dufner (analysis) steps up to the plate in big tournaments like this.  Look to see him to continue to play well after his win two weeks ago in New Orleans.  The difference from two weeks ago is that he is now a married man.  His wedding was this past Saturday (my birthday) to Amanda Boyd, and thus he missed the Wells Fargo Championship last week.  Normally an event like that might take away the focus of playing this week. However, Dufner is the most "chilled", focused, and even keeled person there ever was on the professional golf circuit -- partially confirmed by comparing his wedding pictures with his pictures after winning the Zurich Classic.  While he won the last time out, he has yet to miss a cut this year on the mainland (he missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January -- his first event of the year), and he also finished 6th in this event last year.

Mickelson (analysis) -- one can't forget Lefty.  He has been included on this year's Hall of Fame ballot, and got the call this week that he would be accepted into the ring of honor.  Not that getting to be a member of the Hall of Fame was a high priority for Mickelson -- it will just add to his accolades -- it might keep his confidence high this week.  He missed the cut in this event in 2000.  Since then he has been north of the cut line (i.e. has yet to miss a cut since missing the cut in 2000), and won the event in 2007.  His average ranking in this event from 2001 to 2011 is 25th.  He placed 26th last week in the Wells Fargo Championship, but in the previous two tournaments before last week, he finished 3rd (the Masters) and 4th (Shell Houston Open).

Below are my 5 picks for the PLAYERS Championship:

I almost picked two winners in a row.  If McIlroy had won in the playoff, I would have had last week's winner (Dufner in the Zurich Classic) and this week's winner.  But I will take the consolidation prize of adding another point to my total against Bolton.  I need the cushion going into the summer tournaments. :-)  With four of our picks being the same this week, it was Curtis who continued his solid play that put me ahead of Bolton in this tournament.

Wells Fargo Championship

This week the US PGA Tour heads back east to play the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina.  There are some big names in the field this week, including Mahan, McIlroy, Mickelson, Westwood, Woods, and more.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the Wells Fargo Championship.

# Player CLi
1 Phil Mickelson 6.70
2 Jim Furyk 8.30
3 Rory McIlroy 9.35
4 Ben Curtis 10.05
5 Tiger Woods 10.70
6 Ken Duke 15.25
7 Hunter Mahan 16.40
8 Kevin Na 17.05
9 Carl Pettersson 21.90
10 Zach Johnson 22.65
11 Bo Van Pelt 23.50
12 Brian Davis 24.90
13 Rickie Fowler 28.40
14 J.B. Holmes 29.80
15 Robert Garrigus 30.10

Mickelson (analysis), Furyk (analysis), and McIlroy (analysis) have CLi figures below 10, which is usually a good indication that the CLi has a higher probability of predicting that these players will play well in this tournament.  In addition, the 4th and 5th players in the list (Curtis and Woods) have CLi figures just above 10.  So the CLi is "feeling" pretty good this week....that is, if it had feelings. :-)

Mickelson has played this event 8 times since 2004 and finished in the top-10 six of those times.   His best finish here since 2004 is a 2nd (in 2010), and his worst finish is 35th (in 2006).  His average finish (rank) is around 10th (without the 35th finish, it around 6th).  He has not played competitively since the Masters, where he placed 3rd.  The week before the Masters he placed 4th in the Shell Houston Open.

Furyk likes this tournament.  He has won it in 2006, placed 2nd in 2005 and finished in the top-11 three of the last four years.  He is coming off an 11th place finish three weeks ago at the RBC Heritage, two 11th place finishes in the Masters and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and a 2nd prior to that in the Transitions Championship.  Other than the Masters, he hasn't finished higher than 5th in the other 5 tournaments he has played in this year.

McIlroy won this event in 2010, but missed the cut last year.  He hasn't played competitively since the Masters a month ago, where he finished 40th. However, prior to the Masters, he placed 3rd in the Cadillac Championship, won the Honda Classic, and placed 2nd in the Accenture World Golf Championship.

So I am going to go with Mickelson, Furyk, and McIlroy as my first three picks.  As for my final two picks, I am going with the CLi rankings and pick Curtis (analysis) and Woods (analysis).

Curtis is playing well -- he won two weeks ago in Texas and finished 13th in New Orleans last week.  However, he has not played well in this event except in 2008 when he placed 2nd.  He missed the cut the last two years, and was not close to the cut line in either one of those years.  So he has struggled at this course lately, and that makes it difficult to pick him.  However, I am going to go with this play of late and hope he brings back some of that "good feel" from his 2nd place finish in 2008 at this event.

Woods didn't have a strong showing with his swing a month ago at the Masters, where he finished 40th (the same place as McIlroy).  However, he has actually finished well so far this year in events he has played in.  He won the Arnold Palmer in mid-March and finish 2nd at the Honda Classic in early March.  If you take out the Masters and the WD in the Cadillac Classic, he has finished no worse than 17th this year in the other 5 tournaments he has played in .  When you throw in how he plays in this event, it is hard to not pick him.  Yes, he missed the cut in 2010, shooting 79 in the 2nd round during that year.  But he has finished no worse than 11th the other 4 times he has played the event since 2004, including winning the event in 2007.

Below are my 5 picks for the Wells Fargo Championship:
# Player CLi

Both Bolton and I redeemed ourselves after the poor (tough) picks last week in the Valero Texas Open.  I had a win (Dufner) and three players in the top 7.  Bolton had two players in the top 6.  Compared to last week, our average ranks are over half last week's figures.  The average rank last week was 79.2 and 80.2, and this week our average ranks are 31.8 and 38.6.  The average rank figures could have been lower, but we each had a blemish on the scorecard with one player missing the cut.  With Dufner winning his first US PGA Tour event, I was able to run away with a win in the tournament.  This win puts me ahead again this year.
