Tour Outsider: Deutsch Bank U.S. Championship

The US PGA Tour heads to Boston for the 2nd of 4 FedExCup playoff tournaments. The Deutsch Bank U.S. Championship has a Friday start with a Monday (Labor Day) finish

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 Tiger Woods 1.80
2 Justin Rose 8.40
3 Tim Petrovic 16.40
4 Steve Flesch 18.00
6 K.J. Choi 21.30
7 Adam Scott 21.60
8 Geoff Ogilvy 22.30
9 Tim Clark 22.90
10 Steve Stricker 25.20
11 Billy Mayfair 27.90
12 Camilo Villegas 27.90
13 Carl Pettersson 28.30
14 Jeffrey Overton 29.50
15 Arron Oberholser 30.40

All of the players in the top 15 look good this week in the CLi list. It is hard to narrow it down to just 5 from the 15 shown. Tough.

I guess I will go with Woods and Rose, as they have very low CLis for the tournament. Woods has a 1.8 CLi and Rose has a 8.40. That is basically saying that they really are looking good to play well here this week.

Then I will skip Petrovic, even though he is playing well. One of the reasons I skipped him is that he didn't play well here last year missing the cut. He played well here the previous two years, and he is playing well currently. That makes it hard to skip over him.

I will pick Flesch as he is looking good curently, and has played well here in the past.

I will skip over Furyk as he is a question mark with his back issues.

Then will pick Choi (who is playing extremely well of late) and Scott (who plays well on this course).

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Deutsch Bank U.S. Championship are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Tiger Woods 1.80
2 Justin Rose 8.40
3 Steve Flesch 18.00
4 K.J. Choi 21.30
5 Adam Scott 21.60

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

This week we have 3 players in common: Woods, Scott, and Choi.

Tour Outsider: Barclays Classic Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Barclays Classic to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 Jim Furyk 2.55 25 35 31 47 $49,035
2 Ernie Els 11.40 4 8 6 4 $289,333
3 Padraig Harrington 16.20 35 30 31 64 $33,775
4 Kenny Perry 16.95 25 8 6 30 $49,035
5 Vijay Singh 23.75 MC MC 104 116 $0

Looks like skipping over Garcia to pick Singh was not a good choice this week, as Singh missed the cut and Garcia placed 25th.

Of note, it was nice to see a fellow University of Illinois alumni (where I did my grad work), Steve Stricker, win the tournament. That was nice to see, especially after he had gone through some tough years on the golf course. Since we are talking about alumni, it was also nice to see fellow SMU alumni (where I did my undegrad), Colt Knost, win the U.S. Amateur this weekend. Go UofI and SMU!

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider: Wyndham Championship Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Wyndham Championship to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

4 Steve Flesch NA DNS DNS DNS DNS $0
5 Lucas Glover 17.35 20 6 22 2 $52,143

This week was a bad week. I was dead in the water before the tournament even started, as Choi and Flesch both were a no-show. Then Ogilive decide to miss the cut. So only had two horses in the race come the weekend, which were Warren and Glover. Both faired well, playing 13th and 20th respectively.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Shedloski was also hurt with Choi and Flesch as no shows. Then, in addition, Love pulled out because of kidney stone complications. Ouch.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Ousider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Ousider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $137,857 $21,000 TO
Avg Rank 92 118.4 TO
Made Cut 2 2 DRAW
Outcome -- -- TO

The Tour Outsider won the Total Earnings category, but both of us were on the low end here.

The Tour Outsider won the Avg Rank category, but again, both of us didn't fair to well in this category either.

The Made Cut category was a draw, with both of us having just 2 players out of 5 making the cut.

This tournament was won by the Tour Outsider.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider to date is, 10 wins to the Tour Outsider, 5 wins to the Tour Insider, and 3 draws.

Tour Outsider: Wyndham Championship

The US PGA Tour heads to the Carolinas to play the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 Charles Warren 4.80
2 K.J. Choi 5.05
3 Joe Ogilvie 11.65
4 Steve Flesch 13.35
5 Jonathan Byrd 13.40
6 Michael Allen 20.00
7 Lucas Glover 20.35
8 Tim Herron 21.05
9 Ryan Palmer 21.45
10 Kevin Sutherland 22.40
11 Jason Dufner 23.80
12 Charlie Wi 25.85
13 Kent Jones 25.95
14 Briny Baird 27.55
15 Chris Couch 28.00

The top 7 or 8 players in the list look good for this tournament. However, I can only pick 5 players. So, I am going to pick the to 4 (Warren, Choi, Ogilvie, and Flesch), skip on Byrd, and pick Glover. The reason why I am skipping Byrd is because he has not played much over the past 4-6 weeks for some reason. He has only played in the British Open and the PGA Championship these past 4 weeks. He missed the cut in both of those majors. So don't know if he is 100% healthy at this point and thus can't risk picking him this week.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Wyndham Championship are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Charles Warren 4.80
2 K.J. Choi 5.05
3 Joe Ogilvie 11.65
4 Steve Flesch 13.35
7 Lucas Glover 20.35

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

This week we have 2 players in common: Choi and Flesch.

[ UPDATE 2007-08-14 4:40pm: Choi, Flesch, and Love III have all withdrawn from the tournament as of Tuesday, 2007-08-14. Since I had picked Choi and Flesch, and they both withdrew, I would pick Tim Herron and Kevin Sutherland in place of them. However, I need to keep my original picks as it would not be fair to change them when Dave Shedloski can't change his. ]
