Tour Outsider: British Open

The US PGA Tour goes across the big pond (the Atlantic Ocean) for the 3rd major of the year: The British Open.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 Tiger Woods 5.40
2 Scott Verplank 13.50
3 Vijay Singh 13.70
4 Loren Roberts 16.10
5 Phil Mickelson 16.20
6 K.J. Choi 20.30
7 Colin Montgomerie 20.30
8 Jim Furyk 20.70
9 Carl Pettersson 22.70
10 Ernie Els 23.30
11 Hunter Mahan 23.60
12 Sean O'Hair 25.40
13 Niclas Fasth 26.10
14 David Toms 26.10
15 Tom Lehman 28.90

There are some nice players in this list. So it is hard to pass up on some of the big boys, however, I am going to.

I am going to pick the 3 top players in the CLi list. Then after that am going to skip down to K.J. Choi and then down to Fasth for my last two picks. Choi is playing well, having won 2 of the last two tournaments he has played in. Fasth has been playing well too, including on the hard Oakmont Country Club course last month in the U.S. Open.

That means I am passing up on Mickelson, Montgomerie, Furyk and Els to name a few of the big boys in the list which I didn't pick.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the British Open are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Tiger Woods 5.40
2 Scott Verplank 13.50
3 Vijay Singh 13.70
4 K.J. Choi 20.30
5 Niclas Fasth 26.10

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

It is interesting that Shedloski picked Angel Cabrera to play well at the British Open after having won at Oakmont last month in the U.S. Open. If Cabrera wins the British after winning the U.S., then that would be a feat in and of itself for European golf as he plays most of his golf on the European PGA Tour.

This week we have 1 player in common: Tiger Woods.
