Honda Classic

This week the US PGA Tour moves from the west coast to the east coast for the start of the Florida swing of tournaments. As with last year, the Honda Classic is the first tournament in the Florida swing this year.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Luke Donald 3.75
2 S Mark Wilson 7.50
3 S Ernie Els 13.80
4 S Robert Allenby 13.85
5 S Camilo Villegas 14.55
6 S Boo Weekley 16.25
7 S Lucas Glover 18.45
8 S Ben Crane 18.55
9 S Mark Calcavecchia 20.55
10 S Justin Rose 24.40
11 S Michael Letzig 26.05
12 S Jerry Kelly 27.30
13 S Ted Purdy 30.05
14 S J.J. Henry 31.25
15 S Justin Leonard 34.50

I really want to pick Luke Donald this week as he is a clear favorite on paper and in the CLi rankings. However, it makes me nervous that he "twinged" his wrist last week during his last match in the Accenture World Match Play. He "twinged" his wrist to an extent that he flew to New York the next day (or over night) to have his specialist look at it. It makes me a little worried that he would jump that fast. Even though the specialist said nothing serious is wrong with his wrist, I am going to pass on Donald this week.

Going from the 2nd spot in the CLi rankings, I am going to pick the next five players. Wilson won last week in the US PGA Tour event in Mexico and won the tournament in 2007. Els plays well in Florida and he now has his house in the West Palm Beach area (where the Honda is now played). Allenby is playing well. Villegas plays well in Florida, as it is second home (apart from Columbia). Weekley is a fan favorite in Florida and south Florida is home to him as is the entire state (even though he is from the panhandle of Florida).

Below are my 5 picks for the Honda Classic:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Mark Wilson 7.50
2 S Ernie Els 13.80
3 S Robert Allenby 13.85
4 S Camilo Villegas 14.55
5 S Boo Weekley 16.25

  1. Hi John,

I will take Villegas, Allenby, Els, Weekley, and Sergio this week. I think the CLi will prove to be pretty accurate this week.

  3. John,

I am just getting into Fantasy Golf this year and appreciate the CLi site. Is there a link anywhere that explains how the formula works or how the numbers are calculated?

I am in the CBS Fantasy League so I have to keep my salary under 1 million. Here are my picks for the Honda:

Villegas, Allenby, Weekley, Jimenez, and Purdy

    Good luck,

    Bret from Minnesota

  4. Brett,

You can see an FAQ for the CLi here:

As well, you can play around with creating your own CLi on the GolfInvestors site (you will need to setup an account -- which is free, and the first two custom CLi calculations are free...there after there is a fee).
