U.S. Open

This week the US PGA Tour heads to Bethpage - Black in New York to play the 2nd major of the year: the U.S. Open.

Rank Player CLi
1 Tiger Woods 4.20
2 Jim Furyk 4.40
3 Tim Clark 9.70
4 Steve Stricker 9.80
5 David Toms 10.60
6 Phil Mickelson 16.60
7 Vijay Singh 20.30
8 Paul Casey 23.20
9 Geoff Ogilvy 23.90
10 Justin Leonard 24.00
11 Ian Poulter 25.00
12 Mike Weir 26.10
13 Kenny Perry 27.30
14 Sean O'Hair 28.40
15 Thomas Levet 29.70

I am going go with the top 3 players in the CLi rankings: Woods, Furyk, and Clark. Then I am going to skip Stricker, pick Toms, skip Mickelson. and pick Singh.

It is hard for me not to pick Stricker as I am a University of Illinois alumni. However, I am not sure how he will hold up at Bethpage - Black.

I am skipping Mickelson because he has too much on his mind with his wife dealing with cancer. It is hard to play in a major, much less any pro golf tournament, with such a large issue on one's mind.

I hope both Stricker and Mickelson play well even though I didn't pick them. I hope they prove me wrong.

Below are my 5 picks for the U.S. Open:

Rank Player CLi
1 Tiger Woods 4.20
2 Jim Furyk 4.40
3 Tim Clark 9.70
4 David Toms 10.60
5 Vijay Singh 20.30

  1. Hey John,

Haven't posted in a while. I like your top 3 picks, although I am not going to pick Clark. Here are my picks for the US Open:

Woods, Furyk, Stricker, Ogilvy, and Perry

Although, I actually like Sergio to do well this week as well, despite his rough year so far.

  2. Hey Baummer, it is good to hear from you.

For your 5th pick, Perry, it would be cool to see him take the U.S. Open after not winning the Masters. It would be redemption in his mind. He has been playing well the past couple of years and a major is hopefully in his near future.

As for Sergio, it has been a rough year. I don't think he is completely over his personal issues (girlfriend). He is soo emotional, that when he has a falling out with his girlfriend it will affect his golf game. It will be interesting to see if that happens with Mickelson as he is going through a tough time with his wife being diagnosed with cancer. I hope both of them, as with Stricker, play well. It will show to themselves and others that they have the mental focus to knocked out distractions when on the golf course.

  3. I am going to throw in a different number five - Angel Cabrera. US Open winner balanced against a fairly fast playing style. Saw him play in Bermuda at the PGA Grand Slam - awesome distance.

  4. Greg,

Now that would be interesting to see Cabrera win this week. He has won a U.S. Open before (2007), so he knows how to play courses setup by the USGA. And if he did win, he would be half-way to a same-year grand-slam after winning the Masters earlier this year. If he putts well, he definitely has a chance. So it is up to how he welds the flat-stick this week.

  5. Look out for David Toms this week as he's 1st in driving accuracy and 10th in overall driving...I just have a feeling.

Also, I was wondering if the CLi is still accurate given the fact you've turned off golfinvestors...is fresh data still being entered such that we can trust the CLi?

    Thanks!

  6. Yes, Toms has been hitting it well of late. Hopefully he keeps that trend going this week when the rough is high.

Yes, I have kept the data up to date for calculating the Golf CLi. So the Golf CLi calculations for the U.S. Open are accurate in terms of the selected Golf CLi calculation configuration I selected.

  7. Are you going to post picks this week? Whats up with CLi?

  8. No, I didn't make picks for the Travelers Championship. As well, I didn't run the default CLi calculation for the Travelers Championship. I was traveling and didn't have time to do either one.

As for showing the CLi on the golfcli.com site, the golfcli.com site was recently updated in a manner that requires users to create an account on the site and pay for their customer versions of the CLi calculation. Users now control what their settings for their CLi calculations will be for each tournament.
