Tour Outsider: Verizon Heritage Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Verizon Heritage to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 S Aaron Baddeley 8.65 2 3 7 23 $484,000
2 S Stewart Cink 10.00 7 7 4 4 $160,050
3 S Jim Furyk 10.85 4 6 7 14 $264,000
4 S Sean O'Hair 14.50 MC MC 120 112 $0
5 S Chad Campbell 18.85 MC MC 76 95 $0

The top 3 picks did very well, as all of them placed in the top 7. I missed two things: 1) picking the winner (Boo Weekley was the ultimate winner, and Shedloski picked him), and 2) having all 5 of my picks make the cut (had two players miss the cut in O'Hair and Campbell).

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $908,050 $1,209,890 TI
Avg Rank 41.4 36.6 TI
Made Cut 3 4 TI
Outcome -- -- TI

The Total Earnings category was won by the Tour Insider.

The Tour Insider won the Avg Rank category.

The Made Cut category was won by the Tour Insider.

This tournament overall won by the Tour Insider with a clean sweep of 3 categories.

If I am going to lose, this was a good way to do it. Shedloski picked a winner in Boo, and I had some good picks with 3 of my players in the top 7. This week showed some good competition in regards to picks for the tournament.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider year to date is, 11 wins to the Tour Outsider, 4 wins to the Tour Insider, and 3 draws.

The CLi top 15 looked like this (see below).

Tour Outsider: Verizon Heritage

This week the US PGA Tour gets back to the regular tournament schedule and heads to the oceans side to play the Verizon Heritage.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Aaron Baddeley 8.65
2 S Stewart Cink 10.00
3 S Jim Furyk 10.85
4 S Sean O'Hair 14.50
5 S Bart Bryant 16.95
6 S Woody Austin 17.90
7 S Chad Campbell 18.85
8 S Fred Funk 20.05
9 S Billy Mayfair 21.85
10 S Tom Pernice Jr 21.85
11 S Brandt Snedeker 24.80
12 S Boo Weekley 25.30
13 S Jerry Kelly 26.30
14 S Bo Van Pelt 27.60
15 S Ernie Els 28.20

I am going to go with the top 4 in the CLi rankings. Then will skip over the two older guys, Bryant and Austin, and pick Campbell.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Verizon Heritage are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Aaron Baddeley 8.65
2 S Stewart Cink 10.00
3 S Jim Furyk 10.85
4 S Sean O'Hair 14.50
5 S Chad Campbell 18.85

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 1 player in common in this tournament: Cink.

Tour Outsider: The Masters Review

It is now time to review the picks for The Masters to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 S Tiger Woods 1.50 2 5 13 17 $810,000
2 S Vijay Singh 4.10 14 16 13 17 $135,000
3 S Retief Goosen 5.50 17 7 11 11 $112,500
4 S Jim Furyk 8.60 33 19 13 6 $42,375
5 S Luke Donald 9.90 MC MC 46 33 $5,000

Being the first major of the year, I did ok. The blemish on the score card was Donald. He missed the cut by a stroke.

The rest of the players did well, especially for the first 3 rounds. During the final round, the 4 players that made the cut moved down a total of 19 places. Goosen and Furyk lost a total of 24 places in the final round.

Tiger came in second, but was not close to winning like most everyone predicted. His putter let him down this week.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner

The Total Earnings category was won by the Tour Insider.

The Tour Outsider won the Avg Rank category.

The Made Cut category was a draw.

This tournament overall was a draw.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider year to date is, 11 wins to the Tour Outsider, 3 wins to the Tour Insider, and 3 draws.

Tour Outsider: The Masters

This week the US PGA Tour is holding the first major of the year, with the pros going to Augusta, Georgia to play The Masters.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Tiger Woods 1.50
2 S Vijay Singh 4.10
3 S Retief Goosen 5.50
4 S Jim Furyk 8.60
5 S Luke Donald 9.90
6 S Geoff Ogilvy 11.05
7 S Phil Mickelson 11.45
8 S K.J. Choi 11.75
9 S Stewart Cink 11.90
10 S Padraig Harrington 16.55
11 S Justin Rose 17.30
12 S Bernhard Langer 17.75
13 S Fred Couples 18.00
14 S Zach Johnson 19.40
15 S Tim Clark 20.40

Wow! Look at all of those low CLi figures. The top nine (9) players are all under 12, with the top five (5) under 10. Only one player has a CLi greater than 20, and that is the 15th player, Tim Clark with a CLi of 20.40. So all of the CLi figures are low for the top 15 players in the CLi rankings this week.

This week it would be unintelligent and unthoughtful to not pick Tiger. As one can see, the CLi calculation thinks he will place no lower than second (CLi: 1.50). And he definitely has the lowest CLi, ahead of Vijay by 2.50 CLi points.

Actually, the top five (5) players in the CLi rankings look good. The one player that is an iffy proposition is Goosen. Up until a month ago, he was playing very poorly for his standards. Since then he has turned a corner it looks like in his game. Don't know if this improvement will continue at the Masters this week. He does play well at the Masters, however. It will all depend on how his putter treatments him (and how he treats his putter).

I will trust the CLi this week, and go with the top five (5) in the CLi rankings.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Masters are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Tiger Woods 1.50
2 S Vijay Singh 4.10
3 S Retief Goosen 5.50
4 S Jim Furyk 8.60
5 S Luke Donald 9.90

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 1 player in common in this tournament: Woods. Go figure, who wouldn't include Woods in their picks this week?

Tour Outsider: Shell Houston Open Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Shell Houston Open to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings

1 S Adam Scott 5.45 WD WD 7 1 $0
2 S K.J. Choi 13.45 11 10 10 99 $128,800
3 S Phil Mickelson 14.50 23 22 10 55 $53,760
4 S Padraig Harrington 15.25 26 52 54 37 $38,920
5 S Steve Stricker 16.05 11 7 35 4 $128,800

This week was good. Had no players miss the cut for the most part. However, Adam Scott did withdraw because of illness after the 2nd round --- which that basically is a missed cut in the books. Scott was leading after the first round, and even after at 76 in the second round, was 7th. He was just not feeling good after that and withdrew.

The other four (4) players were in the top 30. That is nice to see.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner
